When I release my clutch pedal it returns to approx. 3 inches higher than the brake pedal. When you press on the pedal it seems like that 3 inches is just free play. Is there a way to keep the pedal from returning so high.

Check your GM Service Manual for a "pedal height" adjustment. Vaguely, I recollect that such an adjustment procedure is described in addition to the clutch adjustment or as part of it.
Otherwise, I would suspect that there is some problem with the clutch linkage installation. There is no specific mechanical "stop" or "bumper" for the clutch pedal. However, I have seen the condition that you describe on many cars, Corvettes and otherwise. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 68 Clutch Pedal return stop?
Karl,
There is a rubber bumper that should be in place at the top of the clutch pedal assembly, but I don't believe it's function is meant as a sort of adjustment, especially if the free pedal-play that you describe is around 3". I would agree that Joe's information would be on target for correcting your adjustment. TBarr #24014- Top
