Casting #, help!!! What engine is this?

Hi, im new on this forum and i was looking for a little help with an issue i have.

i believe i found the casting number on my block but im not sure. my car is a 76 corvette originally L-82 and i was trying to find if engine was original...

the only number i could find that resembles a cast # was
    2M09272V2

i tried to figure out what it meant... obviously doesnt match the vin.. is this not the casting #?

any help would be great, thanks- alex
p.s. i was told that a guy by the name of Joe Lucia knows a lot about part numbers and may be able to help me out

I have no real idea what that number represents, but can tell you that it's not a typical casting number for a Chevrolet engine. If it's on the stamp pad in front of the right hand cylinder head, it instead might be clue as to who built this engine and what type of hardware is inside.

The casting number you are looking for is on the drivers side of the engine at the rear, just in front of the bell housing. It will be to the left of top dead center and should end in the digits of '0010' if it's original. To the right of top dead center will be the casting date information if it is a Flint or Tonawanda cast engine.

That makes sense. Your engine is a 350 cu .in. Target Master/Goodwrench crate motor, 2-piece rear seal, and will be marked "Hecho en Mexico" somewhere on the block. It could be either 2 or 4 bolt block.

This is a GM over-the-counter replacement engine.

All NCRS members are required to memorize at least 2000 casting numbers for their annual membership acceptance test. Master judges are required to know at least 20,000 to retain their black hat.

Alternatively, you can just go to

              www.mortec.com

              or

              www.nastyz28.com

              like us iggerant guys do.

Re: Casting #, help!!! What engine is this?

                          Alex-----

Mike's got it. The GM casting number 10066036 is a crate 350 SERVICE engine originally manufactured at GM's Toluca, Mexico engine plant. These are a widely used replacement engine for many small block applications. This block and engine assemblies manufactured using it are still manufactured to this very day.

While the engine is not the original engine installed at the factory for your car, if your car is an original L-48, then this engine, if originally part of a complete GM SERVICE engine assembly (which is likely), is VERY similar internally to your original engine. So, it should perform very much like the original engine, if not a bit better.
