Attention Joe Lucia: Joe, I would like your opinion on an Ebay item #4591034819 offered by Crane Corvettes. Seems to me the discription doesn't make sense along with the dated (Service carb)? I'm curious as to what you think. Thanks in advance.

Re: 2818 or 2818-1 Holley
That carb has been on e-Bay several times in the last couple of months. The -1 did not exist until the '65 model year went into production. I don't see how one could have been built in August '63. Further, I have been told by more than one carb restorer that the somewhat popular opinion that Holley was using 4 digit dating by 1973 is not completely true. Every early 2818 I have seen has the date code on the RH side of the airhorn; this one is on the left. The TIM&JG is quite clear that no '64 SHP had a 2818-1. I believe it is a service replacement built in 1973. I have been looking for a 2818 for my '64 built fourth week in September '63 for several years, but unfortunately this isn't one of them.- Top

Re: 2818 or 2818-1 Holley
Clem, if you look at the Ebay item (4591034819) pictures, it shows a List 4818-1 with a 384 date code. I just found it interesting and with a start bid of $775 or buy it now for $875, I just wondered what Crane "created".- Top

Jack-----
I just happened onto this post.
I don't know what to think of this carb. I can tell you this, though: I cannot see how any -1 could have been mamufactured as early as August, 1963. The 2818 was in its "infancy" at that time. I don't see how the first revision of that carb could have come along that early. Plus, as far as the records go, the -1 was supposed to have come along in mid-1964, which seems rationale and reasonable.
It's possible that this is a 1973 SERVICE carb. I, too, do not think that the Holley date coding system changed at exactly the same time, especially for SERVICE carbs of older part numbers. It may have been that Holley was "locked-into" using the older date coding nomenclature on these carbs since that's what the GM specs still called for. Later, they may have gotten GM to revise the spec for SERVICE carbs of older part numbers. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
