    C2 dash paint sheen ppg

I'm redoing my 66 convertible and repainting the dash. Sticking to the original blue color, I do not know how flat or shinny the paint should be. I've gone to shows. I see faded flat which is what I had, and a bunch that are shinny from amorall. What was factory original? I'm using PPG DAR with dx685 flatener, The P-Sheet mix ratio's show how to mix for flat, eggshell, semigloss, gloss.

I have new dash skins, and a refinished cluster, new seat covers, so I would like to get the painted part of the dash correct.

Does any one know? I was 5 when this car was built so I was to young to remember. Can't tell from Pictures. To many different sheens at Carisle. I'm leaning toward eggshell and if its to dull, AMORALL!

After three years on this car I'm in the home stretch, ready to put the boby back on the frame.

    Appreciate any imput.

I don't know about PPG's formulas. I would lean toward flat. Why not do sample of flat and eggshell, and then compare that.

There are different gloss levels used in different areas of the interior. If you check the link below it will take you to a summary for '65, 66 is generally the same.

        Clup,
I noticed that there is no reference to the color of the vinyl dash pads. I assume this is because they are not painted. Do you know if the colors are different? I am also redoing the dash of my '66 (red) and am wondering if the red vinyl dye from LICS would work on the fiberglass dash. (Both as far as color match and adhesion) Or should I get a seperate paint (Ditzler 71497) just for the dash?
Would love to hear more about this.
        Thanks
        Dave

I'm not sure I know what you mean by "different" the dash pads are of a low sheen on colors other than black ( I wouldn't go as far as to say flat) on most of the original cars I have owned, (where i'm sure no "armour all or similar stuff had been used)

By different, I meant... should one use a different medium; "dye" on the vinyl pads and "paint" on the fiberglass... which could result in a different sheen and possibly even color on the entire dash. Or could one use the same medium (vinyl dye on both). That's assuming that dye would work on the fiberglass.
            Hope this makes more sense.

Hi Dave - hopefully others will chime in, but I believe the viny dye is formulated for use on the dash pads/vinyl use. GM didn't use this dye originally, the color was impregnated in the vinyl. The paint codes Bill lists are the original jobber codes from they primary paint suppliers. I would use a factory mix in current jobber paint technology to achieve the color......and the flattner will be required to get a correct sheen.....Craig

What I meant to say is use the vinyl dye ONLY for the dash pads.......use the factory mix code/paint formulation for the other areas of the fiberglass dash. Craig

That is correct. The paint codes shown are for the Metal/Fiberglass parts of the interior.

I have painted my stering column, Ebrake bracket, and hood bracket with GM restoration Black. It looks really good with a nice sheen.I do not know if that is correct or not, but it looks dead on. My dash is Medium blue but did the black dashes have more shine than the colored ones? By the way when we typed in the interior code into the computer to mix the paint, It actually came up as Nassau Blue which is also the exterior color of my car.

Am I correct in using a single stage paint and not a base coat/clear coat?

By the way I'm leaning toward a flat from the info you nice people have provided me. Thank you for all your imput so far.

                    Thanks

                    Joe
