Part # 1052271 Rear Axle Lubricant

Is this GM Axle Lubricant approved for my 68 Positraction rear end or is it for regular GM rearends only?
I don't want to do any damage or cause any problems.
    Thank you,
    Kurt #26406

1052271 is okay for all vintage Corvette axles (and manual transmissions) and so is any commercially available SAE 80W-90 GL-5 gear oil, which will probably be cheaper.

If the axle is Positraction you must add at least one 4-oz. bottle of 1052358 friction modifier additive (or equivalent) to prevent Positraction clutch chatter.

IIRC the capacity of the Corvette axle is speced at 3.7 pints.

GM #1052271 is GM-discontinued. It's replaced by GM #89021671. That's what I recommend you use.

My rear end guy recommends the posi fluid from Ford. Says it's better & cheaper than GM. Also, I don't know the part numbers, but the last time I tried to buy the GM posi fluid (2 years ago), it was no longer available in Calif.

AFAIK the Ford and GM addtive is the same along with other OEMs.

Any clutch or cone type LSD needs the same addtive.
