    Carter WCFB rebuild problem

I'm in the process of rebuilding the twin 4bbl Carter carbs on my '57. The carbs do not have brass tags so I can't be sure of their origin or if they are correct to my '57. However, when I took the first one apart I discovered a difference between the accelerator pump plunger and the new plunger included in the rebuild kit. The old one has a spring as a part of the plunger which is apparently not removable. The one from the carb rebuild kit does not have this spring. Has anyone had any experience with this? I suppose I could proceed with the new springless plunger and see what happens. Help!

you need the spring because the pump bottoms out in the well before you reach wide open throttle. the carb will not open all the way if you have no spring.

      Mike,

I believe you are talking about a small circular spring that is coiled inside the "leather" plunger (rather than the larger plunger return spring that is under the whole assembly). Your new accelerator pump plunger is probably neoprene-like, and requires no little spring to keep it expanded. If this is the case, you don't need it in the "new and improved" assembly.
