That is hard to say. Will you be painting everything (door jams, soft top well, etc)? How many coats are you planning? Keep in mind that lacquer is usually thinned 100% so you have two gallons of sprayable paint for every gallon you buy. Also having some left for touch up is a good thing. Don H.- Top

Depending on the color, you can paint it for under a gallon.
However, if you mess up, or you sand too much while wet sanding, you want to be able to respray a section and make it look good.
And like you said, get it while there is some left.
Buy it all just like Dennis said.- Top

Re: How much lacquer does it take to paint the who
Jim,
My painter suggested that I buy 5 quarts of paint for my '65 convertible. He likes to mix it all together, then pour off one quart for later in case of damage, etc. He would then thin the remaining 4 quarts to paint the car. This would include door jams, under side of deck lid, etc.
If you buy all three gallons, you are going to have more than enough to paint two cars. You will also have an additional $300 or more invested in paint that you will probably never use. It will set around in your way, eventually go bad, any you'll wind up throwing it away.
Good luck on your project.

Re: How much lacquer does it take to paint the who
Just had mine painted last winter in lacquer. Used about 2 gallons. It is correct that you thin lacquer by 100%, but you need to remember that all that solvent disappears in the air, none stays on the car. Lacquer is already low on solids, so thinner makes it even lower yet. The solids in the can are all that stays on the car. A gallon of lacquer thinned only has about 1 quart of solids that you are spreading all over the whole car at a rate of about 2/1000th of an inch thick to give you something to wet sand. Painter used to using basecoat/clearcoat are thinking about a coating that has 505 solids or more before reducing. Lacquers have only about 28% solids before reducing. There fore, takes more lacquer to paint a car than it would if you used basecoat/clearcoat.

Agree with Steve's experience. My painter used two gallons of lacquer to paint my '56. I had him get an extra gallon, mix all three leaving one leftover for potential damage repairs and asked that he have two spray bombs made up for me for small touch ups in the door jambs etc. if needed.

Agree.
The extra $ spent for what may only be an extra gallon of paint will seem CHEAP when you need it for spot repairs and can't find any to match.
Store it in a large container, lid down.

What I mean, is don't store it in separate containers, i.e. 1 quart in one container, and 2 quarts in another. Make sure it's all in the same container not several small ones.
