    1958 Signet Red

Can anybody explain what this color should really look like? I have seen a couple of formulas ranging from very orange (like 57' Venetian red) to an orange with a rose tint to it. Thanks again!!

      Justin,
The best way to describe it is "tomato soup "

Point your browser at www.autocolorlibrary.com. Select Domestic car and Chevrolet. Select 1958 for the year, and the PPG color chips will appear along with the corresponding PPG blend codes. Why 'guess' about a given paint's color/hue, when you can actually see it?

          Jack, With all due respect...

...that color thing/sample/whatever, IMHO is almost totally useless as far as picking a color match from the 50's/60's, whatever. I would not buy paint or paint my car based on what is offered on this site. The '58 "red" issue is enough to keep one awake at night - and, even during the day...

The color issue needs far more research and study than simply clicking on this site. I would agree, it IS a place to start. Best, Dennis

PS - PPG wasn't even the OEM supplier, Dupont would be that person.

I painted a 58 Signet red back in the early 70's. Later that day, I went back to the DuPont store and bought a gallon of Roman Red for a reshoot. The signet red is almost sort of "salmon" in color. Not quite, but it's not very red either.

Cambells Tomato soup was the best description that I have ever heard used.

                  Do I have Altzies????

Having grown up in Detroit, sure seems to me the Ditzler Brothers 'harpooned' their first automotive customer (Cadillac Motor Company) in 1902 and ran their Detroit paint factory (The Ditzler Color Company) until acquired by Pittsburg Paint & Glass in 1928 with the name change to PPG Industries in 1968.

Now, I readily agree that aged original color chips that've been scanned into a computer then transmitted and re-displayed on an arbitrary display monitor can't be trusted for PRECISE color temperature rendition. But, the site gives you something better than word of mouth description (an approved vendor's current blend code) which was my intent on this thread.

My copies of Chevy P&A Catalogs list both Duco (Dupont brand) and Ditzler (PPG brand) color codes for cars of this era. Even Dupont will have 'massaged' their interpretation of specific components used to achieve a given blend code when mixing to order today vs. yesterday...

But, that's life in the world of paint. Do you know something I don't on PPG's data base being 'unreliable' or inferior to Dupont's, Dennis?
