    C-3 Engine finish question

On a 1968 small block there are the flash chrome ignition shields which partially cover over the four (sparkplug shields???). They look like large horizontal "J's" two on each side. What is the proper finish for these? Cad plating, painted (what color), natural or something else. I don't see any reference in the 68/69 TIM.

    Thanks, John

    John-----

There are 2 sets of shields. The outer shields are the radio interference ignition shields. These are retained by wing nuts attached to brackets mounted on exhaust manifold bolts. For 68-69, these shields are stainless steel. At least, the 2 left side shields and the right front shield are stainless. The right rear shield may be stainless or chrome plated steel.

The other shields are the spark plug heat shields. These shields are INSIDE the RF shields and are attached to the block by one 1/4"-20 cap screw with captured star washer (same as most oil pan/timing cover screws). These shields are finished in clear zinc plate with NO chromate (i.e. "gold") overplate.
