    carpet installation

I have just pulled out my old carpet and pad. How clean do I have to get the fiberglass before I start gluing down the heat shield, jute padding, and carpet? Thank you Bill#44207

    Re: carpet installation

    Bill,
I just did this same project a few weeks ago in my 68 coupe.
I vacuumed all the loose dirt, then washed the fiberglass with Castrol Super Clean (Simple Green or Fantastik will also work) rinsed everything with clear water and sponge. Then I glued down the heat shield and laid the jute padding and rug in place. The jute was already glued to the rug. It fit so well and is held under the console and the kick panels and sill plates that I did not feel the need to overdo it with the glue. (That's why I didn't glue the jute to the heat shield.) Plus the seat tracks also hold the rug in place so if you fit it correctly, it will be so snug that there is no movement.
You also have the 3 rubber plugs on the firewall (on each side) so there isn't much that can move around.
This is a nice project because the end result is so noticeable and very satisfying, unlike some projects.
I used the 3M spray adhesive, heavy duty, and the nozzle is very precise so overspray was not a problem but be careful anyway.
    Good luck,

      Kurt,
What did you use for the heat shield material? I see so many options, from sheet material to pre-cut.I will be doing the job you describe next spring (hopefully..)

        Re: carpet installation

After reading many reviews from many different Corvette users, I opted for the Reflectix product sold at Home Depot that many used and were pleased with.
It comes in varying width rolls, I used the 24 inch and it was around $20.
It was very easy to install and conformed to the countours of my 68 floor very well. There are more expensive brands available and have greater insulation quality (perhaps) but I live in New England so do not experience Florida temperatures. I did very little cutting and the 24 inch width allowed for seamless coverage on the floor whihc was important to me as the floor and firewall are the hottest and i didn't want seams and tape in those areas. It comes in 16 and 48 inch widths as well. It is impossible to tell by looking at my carpet installation, that there is anything under it, the fit is that good.
