    C1 steering wheel refininshing

Anyone had any luck painting or otherwise refinishing a C1 steering wheel? I remember painting one red many years ago using the same acrylic lacquer I used on the rest of the interior. The results were reasonably good, but it eventually chipped a little. Would today's paints be more durable? My wheel is in good shape and I would hate to spend $400 to replace it. The jewel blue has become sort of jewel greenish -blue over the years.

In keeping with Ed's question has anyone had any experience with restoring the "grain" on the same wheel ?

I just had my 60 steering wheel done. The painter used expoxy to fix the small cracks and painted it with a urethene paint. It looks great. Hasn't been long enough to have confidence in long term durability.

I have some base coat-clear coat paint in the proper color. Would it be as durable as the urethane?

          Re: C1 steering wheel Pebble

I have seen some wheels "Pebbled" by using a toothbrush and flicking droplets on the wheel a bit at a time until the desired finish was attained. It looked good for judging but not sure how long it would wear.

              Hey Wayne:

Is this the "Orange Peel steering wheel" I've read so much about.

Why not send the wheel to the man who does a PROFESSIONAL restoration that lasts, and judges well in NCRS meets? I've arranged at least 50 restorations of wheels for various show car owners. The correct technique for restoration isn't easy.

Unless I missd something, I never did see any response as to the approximate cost of "professional restoration" or the time involved.

Ed- The base/clear will work fine, and be very durable. Add some flex-n-flat (PPG 2060) in the recommended amount... it makes the clear flexible, and will dull the shine to look more like the original plastic.

Glenn, Thanks for the information, and for the comments in your other post. If I were in the process of building a $50,000 car to trailer around to shows, I would be interested in absolute correctness. As it is, the guys at the Saturday night cruise-ins won't know the difference as long as it looks nice. Honest.
