I'm about to give a speed 4 console, which shows some pitting, to a friend who works for a company that does "flash" chroming, for stripping and rechroming. Several members have posted in the past that they were going to have their console rechromed and as my friend has never worked with this material before (pot metal)is there anything in particular I should tell him about the process. Any particular products to use for repair? What causes bubbles in the chrome and how can this be avoided? Thanks for the help.

Re: C2-Restoring 4 speed console.
Rick,
Re-chroming pot metal parts has got to be one of the more labour-intensive (and expensive) processes out there. If there's pitting, it has to be filled, often several times before the part is finally smooth enough for copper/nickel plating and then the chrome. If your friend has never worked with pot metal before, I'd suggest you look at having someone experienced with the material do the job, or as Wayne says, you might want to have a spare part handy...

Re: C2-Restoring 4 speed console.
Thanks for the information. The company manufactures zinc diecast products so they are very familiar with this type of pot metaland how it reacts. This is one of several consoles I have found at various swap meets and is a good one to start on. Any thing I could tell them to be careful of or how much product or time limits or what can be reversed and what can't. If it does not turn out perfectly the first time can we strip and start over........thanks.- Top

Flash chrome; can you educate me?
Rick,
Can you educate me as to the difference between flash chrome and the 3-step copper, nickel, chrome that I already understand? With flash chrome, is there only 1 step instead of 3?

Re: C2-Restoring 4 speed console.
Rick,
I just had mine replated, however it was the three step pricess and it came out very nice. Another fellow locally had two consoles done by one of the supposed better shops out here and they ruined both of them. How do they plan on repairing the pitting if they aren't going to use nickel and copper?
Good Luck,
