How hard is it to rebuild a steering box? The kits that are avaiable appear to be complete and staightfoward. Am I better off sending it out (expensive) and if so who does it well at a realistic price?

Re: steering box rebuild
It's not very hard to do with instructions. Try Corvette Forum FAQ they may have the step by step. E-mail me with your phone number and I will call and help you If needed. I have done a few.

Re: steering box rebuild
There is a great article in the latest NCRS Restorer. It gives very detailed instructions on rebuilding. I have done one and was not that hard except you need a very low reading torque wrench to set it up. The torque wrench has to be able to read from 0-30inch pounds. If you don not get the Restorer I could always send a copy to you.

Re: steering box rebuild
Basic box rebuilding isn't too hard if you have the correct dial torque wrench. The master kits come with pretty much everything but the bushings are not tight enough to produce the type feel the box is capable of. Typically the new bushing will reduce pitman shaft side play to about.005" +/- .001. To get a better fitting box requires machining and fitting oilite bushings to your pitman shaft. This in addition to correct preload and lash adjustment will give you a very tight response steering box. The gears need to be in good shape as well as a new set runs about $200. I do a fair amount of custom boxes,if you need any help let me know.
