    67 Radio

I'm helping a friend do some restoration work on a 67. He removed the radio while replacing the dash wiring harness. The radio has three posts aligned vertically for wires on the back, yet the wiring harness only has two wires. To make replacement more confusing, the harness that was in the car (which was modified and spliced) actually had a wire connected to the heat sink via a hole drilled into it and a screw inserted. This does not appear to be correct, and the assembly manual does not indicate in detail which posts the two wires connect to. Anyone know? Thanks.

This is from memory so dont hold my feet to the fire, but I think there is a yellow hot wire, a grey lamp wire and a black ground. These should show in the wireing diagrams. The speaker wires are generally green or some combination of green/white/black stripes. One , the ground ,does bolt to the heat sink.

      Re: 67 Radio Wiring

      Hi Mr Svisco!

I too am working from memory here:

The vertical plug-in connector on the side has at least one power wire - can't remember if it is yellow or possible red. A shorter black wire attaches to a ground under the instrument panel horizonal birdcage brace. A small grey wire originates inside the radio then terminates in the light bult on the side. Antenna wire plugs into the back receptacle. Speaker wires are green or green/black - one attaches to the heat sink as a ground, the other I can't remember. The speaker leads are available in reproduction. Is there anyone in your area with a car apart (or an old harness) that you can look at? Sorry can't recall more.

      Carl

Full internal radio schematics are contained in AC-Delco Chevy Radio technician's handbook. Delco published these each year for every generic car line (Chevy, Cadillac, Etc.). You can get original copies from those specializing in automotive literature (many advertize in Hemmings Motor News) and/or at swap meets. Helm, Inc. may well archive this book too.

Also, I'll bet you a pink slip, you can open the yellow pages, find an AC or United Delco dealer in your area who services radios and he'll actually have copies on file for his bench techs. Last, Howard W. Sams (Indianapolis), baron of any/all electronic repair data, can get you their version of the bench repair manual simply by feeding them the chassis number/part number/model number off the radio (label on outside as well as second copy usually tucked away inside).

While this may be 'overkill' for a simple hook-up operation (having full tech bench documentation), there's usually a reason(s) why the radio was 'tricked' and once you find the means to get it running it often follows that you need to diagnose internal component faults and/or re-align the front end circuitry. So, having radio documentation in your stable of support literature is a boon, IF you're one who's not afraid to open a chassis and probe with an oscilloscope....

          Re: 67 Radio

Here are the connections for all mid year radios: The three pin connector on the back : top, dial lamp, gray wire

          middle,ground, black wire

          bottom, +12 volts, yellow wire

The speaker has one wire to the radio case (ground)near the center top above the heat sink. The other speaker wire goes to the heat sink itself near its center. Be sure the speaker has an output transformer on it,or it will only last a few seconds. Check an assembly manual to see what happened to the third wire from your harness. A Chevy dealer can get the plastic connectors and brass terminals for the power connection and speaker plug,if you can get them to look them up.
