    NOS vrs repo/GM replacement parts

Hi all, I have a few odds and ends that I purchased new back in the early 80's. I am beginning to realize that I might never use some of these things and am considering selling/trading. My question is, are nos items like '68 windshield piller moldings, '67 fuel sending units, various oil/fuel/air filters, radiator hoses, gasket sets, '68 outer door handles, etc., etc. worth more than the current repo or GM replacement stuff? Thanks in advance, g.

It really depends on the part. By the early 80's some Gm replacements looked like the original parts and some ore little resemblence other functional equivalence. I would think the '68 door handles and the 67 fuel sending units would be desirable, as to the rest, it would take an objective comparision to an original to make a fair guess.

Bill, thanks for you reply. I may need to clarify: all of the parts/pieces I have were purchased through GM dealerships, and I was under the impression that at the time that these were old stock items. I remember one counter "genius" in particular who got a kick out of trying to find the stuff I needed back then---numbers had changed, items were located in some "central" wharehouse (maybe Nevada?). Anyway, whenever I was able to get a part that was difficult to locate through the Chevy dealership (this one was in Navato, Ca.), I would order multiples according to how many I thought I migh go through in the future. Don't know if this means I got "real" nos stuff, or if I just got replacement stuff, or both? G.

Both. Bill's right on the money. I started in 74--some stuff was already wrong from GM then, others demonstrated wear in the dies, and others were right on. As Bill said, it depends on the part.

74 was about the same time I started collecting parts for my 1960. I found that almost everything available from GM at that time looked like "factory seconds". Very poor quality and fit.

Factory seconds ya say? Na, no way, you think? Yep, unfortunately they did it, though they would deny it venomously. Once I got an 82 door plainly marked "Service". It had been repaired and primed.

I bought a GM replacement 67 tail light panel vs. a repro thinking I was getting the real deal. It was a total POS and basically unuseable. The back up light housings wouldn't even bolt in the holes they were so far off.

I bought from a local Chevrolet dealer new outside door handles for my 68 backin the early 80's when I was painting the 68 and replacing some parts. The new door handles sure looked nice when installed. First thing to happen to the door handles was the flap started raising and rested above the perimeter handle. Removed and ended up putting a extension on the flap stop pin to make it remain level. Through years of limited use the chrome finish has worn a lot for no more use of a car not used for daily transportation. My original owner 70's door handles are excellent compared to my 68's replacement door handles and the 70's handles have been used a lot in 35 years. Hope your new 68's handles are of an earlier production and better quality.
