I know that the gas tank cover is on when the car is painted. This means that the wiring harness has to be connected to the gas tank sending unit and it comes out through a grommet in the area inder the deck lid. This being the case, it seems that the grommet and at least part of the harness has to be oversprayed. How did they do this at the factory with an extra piece of harness in the way and how did they keep fram painting the whole harness or laying the harness over painted sections of the car?? Thanks, Bob Baird 39424.

Bob - The gas tank cover was in place, however
...not fastened down. The wire harness was not yet installed during any paint process. After paint, the cover was lifted, wiring installed and then the cover was fastened in place. No overspray on any wiring or on any cover fasteners, IMHO. Best, Dennis- Top

gas tank cover paint
There is an article written by Ray Masciarella in the corvette restorer summer 1991 that clearly shows a factory picture of a 57 prior to paint with the rear harness in place. If the cover wasn't on then how was it held in place for paint?- Top

If I recall, you're on dial up.
Click the link, wait half an hour and it will show. Really.
