    C2 rear shock mount install

I found several threads in the archives about removal, but none about install.
How much effort should be required to get the shock mount mount shouldered against the strut mount. I tried tightening the castle nut to pull it in, but gave that up because I was worried about damaging the threads. I started tapping on the elbow with a hammer, then decided I better ask how much "tapping" is permissible.

    Steve----

Are you using new shock mounts? Some of the current versions, both GM and aftermarket, are a little heavy on the knurling. I recommend that you remove the mount and remove a small amount of the knurling with a file. DON"T do this with a grinder or a belt sander----there's too much chance that you'll remove too much material and ruin the part. Just use a sharp file and remove a small amount, all the way around. After filing, dress with a wire brush or wire wheel to remove all filings and "burnish" the knurled area.

If the mounts are used, there will be no necessity to do this, at all. Just pull them in with the nut. They will not "seat" flush with the bearing support fork; they will normally have about a 1/8" "gap" between the fork and the mount.

      Joe

The mounts are new. I'll get out my file.

      Thanks
