Re: can you identify this big tank?
Joe--
Not sure what you're looking for here--it's obviously a 24-gallon tank installed in either a red 56-60 (looks like 56-57 venetian red).
I'm guessing that you are looking for greater specifics, like "whose legs are those, and what is the situation with this tank--going in or going out?" (But, as you noticed, that didn't stop me from adding my 2 cents.)

Mike
I have seen a few original big tanks but cannot claim any special knowledge. I remember seeing one that Dick Ferando sold to Dale Pearman that was similar to this one. It was Fiberglass..this one pictured is metal with some fiberglass sheathing around the mid circumfrance. The gas filler neck coming through the filler door I have seen once before years ago..but am not sure if this set up was factory or not.
Looking to hear more from those that have had lets say 58 - 62 big tank cars and might be more familiar. with the over all look and hardware. The factory backed 56 57 big tank racers had center fill tanks..with the #3 and #4 57 Sebring cars being at least two exceptions..having been modified with right hand side fill big tanks for the Sebring pits.
Thanks,

Re: can you identify this big tank?
Joe, I believe the center fill was used on the 36 Gal tanks which was an "over the counter" part rather than the RPO option of 24 which used the side fill. There are several good articles on these tanks in past issues of the "Corvette Restorer", including I believe one by Mike Ernst.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: can you identify this big tank?
It is definitely configured like a factory 24-gallon tank. The vent pipe and stand on the top, etc., is identical to the fiberglass ones of 60-62. But this one is metal?
I know that the 37-gallon solid axle tanks were fiberglass in 60-62, and in 56 were metal--I don't much know the history of the 24-gallon tank prior to 60.
There are very few out there--I've only had two cars with them (and the Gulf car with the 37-gallon tank) in my 30+ years with solid axles. They're hard to find, and even harder to find are the low-horspower cars with them, although I have documented two 300-hp 62's with the fiberglass 24-gallon tank that were, to all intents and purposes, originally so-equipped.
By the way, I know of one of those 300-hp cars bought in the mid-60's by the guy who still has it--it didn't have the tank when he got it, so a dozen years ago when he "restored" the car, he filled in the inner-body holes unique to the 24-gallon tank cars. To each his own!?- Top

big tank filler neck
Bill
To qualify for Sebring March 56 an internal request was made for several performance and HD parts including a 37 1/2 gallon tank...resulting in a small number of them being made in metal with center fill configuration.
This continued through Dec 1956 Nassau but was updated to a right hand fill for Sebring March 57..probably..still metal!
The RPO 24 gallon tanks that I have seen that were used and were available over the counter were fiberglass.
What is unique about these 2 big tanks in the Wisconsin collection is that they are what appears to be the same 24 gallon configuration..as the RPO tanks but these are metal!
Joe
If these are GM tanks..they would be very special.

Under this message, I can see the picture.
If this is for sale, I just talked to someone yesterday who wants to buy the setup pictured - his was modified to put a sprint car cap (normally in a center fill) into the gas cap area.- Top
