    Re: Bare Fiberglass Surface Condition

I remember George Barlos talking about a repair material they called "putty-rub" that they used extensively during the C1 era in the grind booth to slather on surface imperfections, pits, blowouts, etc. and then sanded after it cured; he said it came in 5-gallon buckets and you could hardly lift one because it was so dense.

john: that repair filler , putty rub, is probably the caramel-colored material i've run into restoring c-1 bodies. at least its caramel colored after spending decades under the paints. mike

        John,
I did come across some of this material on the top curve of the doors and thought it was a later repair. A couple of spots even had a VERY fine knapped fiberglass cloth imbedded in it. I did not strip it off since I was not sure if this was a correction to the panel from the factory that should be kept in place.

And I thought that with a bit of patience, time, and persistance the stripping of the car was going to be within my capabilities. Metal was much easier in some respects. Now I feel that whatever I do, chemical, media blast, razer blade, sanding, heat gun, can damage the fiberglass enough that a body shop will not even touch the car for finishing. Need some encouragement here....
