    VIN # on Front Bumpers - 1963?

My painter and I are stripping the car down and we happen to notice what appears to be a VIN (last 6 numbers) etched not stampped on the underside of the front bumpers where they bolt to the underside of the front of the car. The numbers would be facing to the ground when installed.

I didn't see any information on this in the judging manual but I only have the 3rd Edition.

BTW, the number doesn't match my VIN but it doesn't surprise me considering the history as I know it about the car.

Should their be numbers here? If so or not, I'd like to know so that I can "correct the situation" at the appropriate time.

    Thanks for any help

      Jack,
It sounds to me like the bumpers were etched by someone for ID purposes like some do to their cars for insurance or for theft recovery etc.
The serial number should not be there.
