The 348-409 motors were called boat anchors but mostly after the advent of the
rat motors. In their day the 348's and 409's were king of the hill at the drags and the 348 did happen to win a NASCAR race in 1960.
I had a 315 hp 348 in a '59 Biscayne and graduated to a '62 SS Impala 409 dual quad machine. The big guys, namely Hayden Proffitt and Tommy Groves 409's, ran quicker than mine but I never got beaten at the local northern Calif strips.
The '63 Z-11 427, a stroked 409, was the last of the great big irons with an outrageous 13.5 compression and aluminum front end. They only made 50 of these cars and they are now rarer than chicken lips. Raymond
