I am assembling my standard 67 column and I have two questions. About 1/3 of the way from the bottom of the column, there is a solid space between the mess portion of the column. In that solid portion, there is a grey plastic "bushing" (for lack of better terms) that the steering shaft passes through. This piece is loose and my question is, should it be glued in place, if so, with what adhesive?
My other question is, how snug should the bearings fit onto the shaft. I have about .006" of play based on the caliper readings of the bearing ID and the shaft OD. The shaft turns within the ID of the bearings (both upper and lower). The shaft surfaces are in new condition. The bearing IDs show some slight polishing from wear but I wonder if this clearance is the norm for this assembly or would a new bearing fit snugly onto the shaft.
Thanks.
