    Re: Speaking of Boat Anchors...

The only difference between the CW and CCW engines was the camshaft, distributor, and the timing tab on the timing cover. We had a pair of the Chevy/MerCruiser 482's in a 46-foot Chris-Craft Constellation, and one was reverse-rotation.

i often wondered about the location of the

oil holes in the main and rod journals of the crankshaft with these rr engines were they changed? they now do it by the gearing in the outdrives to reverese the props with both engine turning in the same direction..

Re: i often wondered about the location of the

Good point Clem. It never occured to me that the oil delivery timing would have to be reversed but I don't know how they would have done it. I suppose the angle of the holes could have been changed to provide oil BTC, because it would be ATC if not reversed. Also, I suppose it would require a reverse operation starter and drive?

Also, if you use a gear drive on a non gear drive cam, it will come out correct for a reverse rotation engine. Interesting, these marine engines.

        Re: Speaking of Boat Anchors...

        John,

I once heard a story (fable?) about a run of Chrysler corp pass car engines that had chronic rear main seal oil leaks from day one. Supposedly, the cars returned to dealers for warranty repairs several times but new seals didn't correct the problem. Eventually, engineering found the problem and new crankshafts were to be installed in these problem engines. Supposedly, there was a batch of engines that were build using marine reverse rotation C/S's and the small oil redirect grooves in the seal area of the rear main journal were angld in the opposite direction for normal rotation which pumped oil OUT instead of in. Ever hear of this? (I didn't even know these crankshafts had redirect grooves) This came from an old friend that worked at Chrysler corp in the late 60's and he told the truth about 95% of the time.

          Michael -

I dunno - I went to Chrysler in 1985 after 21 years at GM, but never got into the older Mopars - stuck with Chevy for all my toys. My only hands-on Mopar experience was with the early 392 Hemi (Marine block and heads, Moldex crank, Carillo rods, Arias pistons, Isky valvetrain, Joe Hunt Vertex mag, Hilborn/Enderle injection, Ed Pink-built 6-71's) in my AA/FD in 1961-62; commonly known as "the good old days" The car (much-modified since) is still running in the Nostalgia Drag events at Pomona and Bakersfield.

I'd sure like to see a pic of that car with a very young John Hinckley in it. Maybe it would be better to send it directly to me instead of posting it? I think I sent a pic of a very young mikey next to his very first new Corvette in 64. I sure looked like a punk. (was a punk I guess) Thanks John.

I've seen the pictures John has of this car, as well as his much-butchered 54 Corvette.

So where's the picture of Mike?

                Patrick,

You have mail. Private mail. Mikey looks like such a punk in 1964 that I didn't want to post it.

                Punk Mikey
