    68 Spatre Tire Lock

Does anyone know any soures for the factory original spare tire lock and key?
I purchased a lock many years ago at a swap meet but several large locksmiths have been unable to "unlock" it and rekey it to fit my 68 key.
    Thank you,
    Kurt # 26406

Do a search on this web site for Pat's Locks. He seems to be one of the locksmiths of choice for members.

Kurt, you can also try Jesser's Classic Keys. I asked once on the cost of re-keying a spare tire lock, and it was in the neighbourhood of $125.00 U.S.

I took my spare tire lock (with the key), my rear compartment lock (with the key) and my alarm switch lock (with the key) and went to a local locksmith. He keyed them all alike using the alarm key for $30. Maybe if you didn't have the keys it would be more costly, but I would try a local locksmith first. Try to find one that has been in business for a while.

Kurt, If you have an original...rekey it. They are different shapped compared to the repros that I have seen. It is possible the later cars had the repro style though. But, when I restored mine I compared it to the repros and it was different in shape slightly. A good lock smith will key it in know time. In my case they had a a couple rings that had the correct keys. They simply tried one key after another untill it popped open. Then they took it apart and keyed it. Pretty straight forward. Actually, they gave me the keys and told me to keep trying them untill it popped open. Had to giggle them and stuff. Sort of fun to do. I have worked with Pat also and he is easy to work with. Terry
