    C-2 Trim Rings

    Hi to All,
I need to strip the flash chrome plating off of some trim rings with muratic acid before I restore them. Can anyone give me an idea as to the time needed in the muratic acid bath to strip the chrome off and then neutralize the acid in a baking soda bath?
As Always, Thanks for your time and responses,
    Dave

    Dave,

I've stripped several stainless hubcaps using Muratic Acid. If you are using it full strength, let the parts soak for about 10 minutes or just check them periodically and when they appear dullish looking, the chrome is gone.

Pull the parts and rinse off the acid with a garden hose and then dunk them in the baking soda bath. I use a 1 pound box of soda for every 5 gallons of water.

Slosh them around for a few more minutes in the soda water and then rinse them with the garden hose for the final time.

You want to rinse and neutralize as quick as possible after the acid soak to prevent pitting the stainless.

Be careful and if you have a pair of full wrap safety glasses, it a good idea to wear them just to prevent acid splashing in your eyes.

    good luck,
    tc

      Tracy,

I always thought the trim rings were polished stainless steel, but I learn something every day. Good advice on the ebay item, thanks.

          Jerry -

They are polished stainless, but they're also flash-chromed after polishing to maintain the luster, as is all the exterior polished stainless trim on the car.
