I think the owner bought it back to save face.

Owner (probably) bid in the last 45 seconds

Previous high bid, many multiples below value of last bid, was 3 days, 10 hours before, so at least the web discussions had some effect. Let no one believe that this car actually sold for that amount. Gives the (still) owner bragging rights when he goes to Barrett.

One bid from 180K to 450K to make reserve is certainly unusual to say the least. As I recall, sellin a car on ebay is a flat fee of $75 if it sells, rather than a % of the total sale, so no sweat for a seller to save face.

              Wayne,

I don't know Wayne, bidding in the last few seconds (snipe bidding) is something a real buyer does to stave off competion from other bidders.

If the seller was pumping this price, I think he would have bid the reserve price bid with ample time for some other sucker to swoop down with a higher bid to really win.

Maybe the car will go to Japan and we can all just forget about it.

              I'm tired of this,
              tc

You could be right Tracy but the owner or his shill bidder could have had the next high bid at $449,500. I would still have only shown up as the 181,XXX until somebody either sniped it or another shill bidder bid $450,000. In any case I think the car will show up again someplace for sale with the ebay sale as proof of value. If it was a real sale I have some documentation the new owner might find interesting. GL

Re: Ebay L88 Message from high bidder

This is a copy of an email I got from the high bidder. Makes me feel good.

I bid on it knowing it was fake. Mainly I did it just to cost him some more money or at least the hassle of getting a refund through eBay. I figure if he wants to misrepresent the car then he deserves to have to spend some extra money and/or effort on his advertising.

If the seller actually expects me to buy the car he will first have to present evidence which proves the car is not one of the Shriner's cars. If he can do that then I'll gladly pay his reserve price.

I'll bet the seller is looking for a slightly later build date basketcase '67 somewhere that no one knows about that has been forgotton by everyone just for the tags to be able to "wash" this car with.

It's almost ironic that this is probably now the most well documented "fake" L88 car...perhaps a item of intrest/value in of itself...

I know I'd seen this car on Collector Car trader in the last 5 yrs at 300K. Even though the B-Jackson auctions, Mecum, etc raise high dollar bids on cars, it's not reality. The home equity bidder is caught up with the media frenzy and light show. Emotional buy. People willing to pay 400K and up normally are not knuckle draggers. There's the danger to a seller such as this. The buyer invariably WILL do their homework before plunking down the cash. It was for sale on and off for the past 3-5 yrs it'll be again.

Read my post on the email I got from the high bidder. Wonder what the seller will do now? Since the high bidder will demand proof that the car is legit and since it isn't he can leave neg feedback explaining the fact the car is a fake.
Since he is going to need some help here, my computer isn't good enough to show the fake documents in a nice cleaned up form, could somebody email me the very best copies they have. Also those who have gone thru the parts list on the repair order with the wrong numbers and prices email me all the info they have including maybe pics of the parts book pages to verify it all. Thanks for your help. GL
