    71 Alternator

    Hi all

I'm a new member of NCRS and the board. Great information! I find this a great site for my restoration project.

I'm looking for an alternator for my 1971 LS5, part number is 1100543. Vehicle was built on Jan 23rd, 1971.

Anyone know where I might find this alternator?

    Thanks!

    Kevin

They had many hard to find Alternators. Some may need John Perkle to rebuild.

          Kevin-----

I can't tell you where to get one, but this is what one looks like. At least, this is how very early examples look. I believe that sometime during the manufacturing run of the GM #1100543 alternator, the configuration of the drive end case changed to the more "closed" style. I don't know when this occured, though. However, I have a feeling that it was about mid-model year or later.

This particular example is an NOS piece that was manufactured on July 2, 1970. So, if it had not gone into SERVICE, it would likely have found a home on a very early 1971 Corvette.

This is quite a "time warp" piece having survived over 35 years in a box and never having been installed on a car. Believe it or not, I was able to buy this for about $200. It's definitely NOT for sale, though.

            Depends on condition.
            Likely $350 to 500.

Still looking for an April or May date for my car. A 544 from July 72 build or later is easy to find, and the cost reasonable. One from a 1971 MY car is a rare bird.

well I sure thought that 544 would go for more than 500$ bucks

                    Yes, I'd say so.

You're really getting the hang of that digital camera, new computer, and photo posting.

It was easy, in this case. The alternator was still in the "staging" area prior to "incorporation" into the inventoried and catalogued collection.

Yes, I seem to recall that it was in that staging area, and not yet swallowed into the chasm.

I hope no one askes you for a part you purchased in 1974. Yikes.
