Power Steering component rebuild ??

I am in the process of rebuilding my steering gearbox awaiting parts for now. I am considering rebuilding my pump and control valve. My cylinder needs to be cut open and have a new chromed shaft installed so it will be sent out for rebuid. I know I saw articles, either in a corvette magazine or the restorer, on the rebuild of the control valve and pump. I cannot find these articles. My shop manual has the procedure for both, but I would like an aricle written by one of us, more detailed. Somewhere I saw where the pump usually only needs its filter cleaned and new seals. I have never driven this car. It was not running when I bought it. NAPA has the seal kits for both. Part numbers are; Control Valve: 7-137 , Pump: 7-132. Prices for each are 17.99 and 17.39 respectively, without any discounts applied. I am certain some of you have rebuilt these components. Is this a pretty straightforward process? Any suggestions on your experiences appreciated. Thanks! Dick Gutman

They are very straight forward and I would not hesitate to use your overhaul manual. They are pretty complete. If you have your original pump, that is good. They are a little different internally compared to passenger cars as I remember. So, look at it closely. I think there will be a special blurp in your manual regarding the corvette differences. The controle valve is the same. If you have a decent work bench and tools you can do both. Terry

i'm presently working on both of these items. the pump is a piece of cake, if your shaft bushing is ok, otherwise it's only a few o-rings and a shaft seal. i can send you a picture of the internals if you want to take a look at what you're getting into. the valve also seems easy enough, just more small pieces. i've got mine back together, but i had one piece that i wasn't 100% sure of the location. my shop manual doesn't show the internals, could you tell me what manual you have that showes it?

Dick, I've got a copy of an article on rebuilding power steering that was on the Corvettemagazine.com website. I can't get that website to come up, but I've got a copy of the article in pdf format, along with some other miscellaneous power steering information I've gathered. I believe there are a couple articles at CorvetteFAQ.com about rebuilding the power steering system.
