    leaf spring rebuild

I'm getting close to tackling a rear end rebuild project on my '64. I figure it would be good to also include rebuilding the leaf spring since it is original to the car. I see that Quanta has a leaf spring rebuild kit available. LICS has spring liners available.

I was wondering what you guys did, or whose products you used in rebuilding your leaf spring.? .. Persuing the CSM, it seems like a pretty straight forward easy job to do.

    John,
I posted something similar a year ago or so. Your leafs should not need "rebending". Basicaly your are looking at bushings, fresh paint, and new liners. Quanta does have a package, I think any will do. The actual "freshing up" of the leafs is not difficult. I had my '72 rear lifted of the ground a bit so as to releave the tention in the springs. then I just carfully unscrewed the bolts on the trailing arms and then the Posi. Very straight forward. I just wanted to watch out for the tension loaded in the springs.

If you could, could you let me know how your springs are painted. I would like to know if they are painted on the bottom, tension side, or painted on both the bottom and top, compression, side. I am looking at writing an article about this and am trying to document the actual paint results on rear springs.

    Good luck,
    Brandon

Before you take the load off the spring, you should loosen the 4 large bolts that attach the spring to the differential cover. Don't take them all the way out but take the tension off them. After that, it is ok to pull the spring the rest of the way. You do this to avoid cracking the diff-cover. Do the same in reverse when putting it back in. Terry

You can save some money by buying only the longest liner. Since the liners only wear out at the ends, your old longest liner can be used fro the next one up and so on.

Thanks for all the replies. ..

            Brandon:
I'll try to get that info to you ASAP, but it might be a couple of weeks before I get started on the rear end project.

            Terry:
Thanks for the heads up about loosening the spring bolts! .. WOW ..

I figure to order the Quanta kit. Seems they even send the liners cut to length - not that it's any big deal or hard to do .. ..
