    I've had success this way.

Leave the ball joints alone and attached. Pull the shock out, put a pipe wrench over one of the coils and snug the jaws. You now have a long lever to rotate the spring in the the pocket. I can't remember if I've done it on a Corvette, but I've done it on some sort of Chevy and maybe a Corvette. Could save you a lot of trouble if it will work for you.

We used to have our millwrights make up spring-seating tools; a piece of bar stock about 30" long, rounded at the end, with a hole in it and a 90*-bent piece of swiveling bar stock attached with a nut and bolt. Grab a coil, pull on it, and it would rotate the spring to seat it properly; punch off the ticket and let it rip Your millwrights probably made 'em too

You blew my cover John. That's where I got the idea. Hafta' use the pipe wrench trick at home, though.
