I may be all wet, but I seem to remember that the '67 heads didn't have a threaded plug in the end. Or was I dreaming?

I think your thinking about the temp sender hole in the side of the head. there on 68 and up. Phil 8063 (some of the aluminum heads have been found with sending unit boss drilled and undrilled)

If you're talking about the threaded plugs in the ends of the heads I've never seen a pre 69 head that didn't have the plugs. When I bought my original engined and overall VERY original 69 L89 coupe some jackass had put cast iron heads on it and painted em silver. In looking around for a correctly dated set over 15 yrs ago, I saw several different configurations, both with plugs, without, and one set even having the plugs on one end of the heads and NOT the other.

                pipe plugs in heads

The 842 head castings had the threaded pipe plugs in the ends of the heads in all of 1968 and early 1969. My late Feb 1969 L89 had one head with the threaded plug (casting date Nov 1968) and one head without the plug (casting early Feb 1969), so the changeover occurred about that time.

All the 074 heads did not have the threaded plugs. I did see a prototype head (for the 074) dated Nov or Dec 1968 and it had plugs on both ends.

I have seen several heads with a plug on only one end, but if you look into the inside of the cooling passages, you can see there was a hole in the other end of the head and the plug was welded into place and the end of the head was re-broached (making it look like no plug was ever there).

As far as painting, I have seen the 1969 heads with as little as a 1/2" band along the edge that bolts up to the block up to having the entire exhaust side painted to nearly the top of the exhaust ports. I guess it depends upon what kind of a day they were having in the paint booth .

Leave it to me to get it backwards

I knew it was one way or the other, just couldn't remember which.
