Another Wiper Problem on my '68

I also seem to have an electrical problem. If I plug in the wiper motor (both connections), it drains the battery, drawing around an amp even with the ignition off. With either connector off, the drain stops. It looks like the red wire always has 12V on it (square connector). I assume I have a problem under the dash, but without going into details, I thought maybe someone has seen this before........

Thanks again! I love this site. I sometimes spend a scary amount of time perusing posts, learning new things, and sometimes, even giving help when I can.

    Thanks, Michael

    Michael,

The immediate cause that comes to mind is that your wiper override knob (under the dash near the steering column) is turned on. Left in the on position it will drain your battery. Hopefully that will be the simple solution. TBarr #24014

Michael you may not have a problem under the dash. First lets assume that what Tom Barr has told you to check, the wiper override switch, is okay. I have a original owner 68 and I know the following problem is real, I have experienced it and because I know it can happen, I am careful. You are going to have to plug in the connectors to the wiper motor to verify that the override switch is off. And you will have to turn on the wipers after turning the override switch to see if they will work. My problem only occurs when the system is not being used and lets just say that the car is parked. Say someone accidently moves the wiper switch from the off position. This will produce a current draw in my 68. Even if the switch is returned to the off position. The only way to get out of this current draw is to start the car and turn on the wipers, and with the car still running, turn them off and when they are parked and the wiper door closes, turn the car off and check and now see if you have the current draw. I am very careful in cleaning the dash to avoid accidently moving the wiper switch.

        Jim,

I can agree with that too. I can't say for sure that I have or haven't run into that problem myself, but I have heard of that happening. TBarr #24014

That was exactly the answers I was hoping to have, guys. To tell you the honest truth, when adjusting the wipers, I have been hooking a battery charger up to the wipers to get them too run, and I haven't actually run the wipers normally, yet. I'm going to be working on this all day today, so I'll let you know if my problems are solved.

          Thanks, Michael
