    CI TRANS LEANK

My 1961 trans is leaking at the front. The trans is now out of the car. Someone is trying to repair it for me. He asked if I could find out if there is a front bearing cap available with a seal? Not sure exactly what it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Joe

      Joe -

There's no seal on the front bearing; lube in that area drains back into the case through a groove in the bottom of the bearing retainer. As Mike said, the leak is most likely at the front of the countershaft hole in the case.

the leak is at the imput shaft cap. it is not at the cluster gear. the front bearing cap goes over the imput shaft and that is where the leak is

            Joe -

There are several approaches to front countershaft leaks, depending on how bad they are. If the hole in the case has gone egg-shaped or oversize, bushing the hole will do it. If it's a minor leak, cleaning the slight recess and applying a sealing compound sometimes works. Others have done the sealing compound trick and made a full-coverage gasket for the interface between the trans and the bellhousing and that fixed it. Guys that deal with Muncies and T-10's every day (like Ed Hartnett, etc.) fix this issue routinely.
