    65 4-speed Reverse Lock-out Rod

The reverse lock-out rod that extends from the "T" handle broke off at the handle a while back and so I bought a replacement handle/rod assembly from one of the suppliers. After installing it however, I found that it wouldn't release even with the "T" handle pulled all the way up. The only way I've been able to use the assembly currently is by partially unscrewing the shifter "ball" so that the "T" handle can be raised further.

I did try grinding small amounts off the end of the lock-out rod, but was afraid to go too far and render it unusable. I'm suspecting that the after-market rod is too long. Does anyone have the correct length (measured from the base of the "T" handle to the bottom of the rod, with the rod suspended from the handle, as it would be installed)? Otherwise, should I be looking at something else as the source of my problem? The original handle assmbly worked fine before it broke.

    Thanks!

I have a rod in my hand. NOS. Part # 3863366. It measures 7 5/8's" close as I can see.

Is your replacement part like the broken part you took out? Does your shift ball have brass threads in it or plastic?

Some of the rods are longer. So, why not just trim the end of the rod to match the length of the old one?

Grant, I had the same problem with a repro part. Because the pin was too long, unscrewing the ball a few rounds resulted in it working ok. To resolve the problem, I filed on the end of the pin until the lockout function worked correctly.
        Best regards,

          Thanks all,

I feel more confident now in filing/grinding more off the rod. In comparing length with the original, it didn't appear to differ by that much; however, given the broken original it was hard to measure accurately.

          Appreciate the responses!
