    Sealing exhaust pipe joints

This may be a silly question, but here it is anyway. Is there a high temp solder (or equivalent) that can be used to seal exhaust joints, but allow them to be disassembled? The u-bolt saddles don't completely seal the joints and welding would mean that removal would require cutting, and therefore replacing, the pipes.

I do not know of any such compound. However, you should not need any. If the exhaust pipes are right, the clamps are right, and the installation is right, the clamps should seal the joints so that no leakage occurs. It is true that welded exhaust joints are better than clamped. However, in some instances they are impractical. Many cars use clamped exhaust joints at one location or another. Virtually all use, effectively, a clamped joint at the exhaust manifold.

Steve, I remember a product called "muffler cement" that came in a tube or pint can. It's intended use was sealing mismatched or out of round exhaust pipes and I have to say that it worked prety good at this...never had a problem taking any pipes apart after this cement was used either. Most any auto parts supply store should have it.

Permatex has a product, Muffler Putty #80333, that should seal any joints.

I "googled" for muffler cement and found Victor Muffler Cement in a tube. Also Permatex Muffler & Tailpipe Putty (80333)and Permatex Muffler & Tailpipe Sealer (80335). I'll check it out.

            Thanks.

Permatex makes some goop that's used to seal these joints.

It's been my experience that clamps will put crimps in pipes such that:

              1. they seal without the need for goop; and,
              2. they really couldn't be readjusted even if you could get them apart.

                Chris

The muffler shop has an hydraulic swage on the tubing bending machine that can remove the crimps and and get both ends back to round for readjustment.
