    Muncie questions

I have a Muncie case 3851325 tail 3846429 and side cover 3884685. The date is stamped P0707 on the left side near the cover. It has a square rear top boss and the speedo is driverside. It was no groves on the input and seems to have 2.56 first gear making it an M-20

    Question I have:
Left side date stamp was pre Dec 1964 but square boss post Dec 1964?
Is the driver side speedometer correct for a Corvette or is this a Pontiac trans?

I plan on putting it up for sale and would like to know if it should go in the Driveline or on a Pontiac site.

It shifted smooth and did not pop out of gear But it looks like it should get a new 1st and 2nd gear. No cracks or welds. Any suggestion on the value of the trans would be appreciated.

    Re: Muncie questions

Driver side speedo output was used '64 Corvette and all Pontiac applications thru the end of Pontiac usage except M-22 in the 70's Your are correct it is a wide ratio trans, and the square boss would place it in the '65 model year. Is there a VIN stamped on the trans, all Corvette trans cases were stamped with the same VIN derivitive as the engine.

I've never seen a left date stamp w/square boss

I would be tempted to say your's is a Dec 1963 assy., based on the date stamp on the machined lower right corner of the sidecover. And yes, the square(ish) top boss with NO rounded formost extension didn't appear before Muncies with approx. early December 1964 assy. dates.

BTW, don't believe that business about no "584" passenger side tail housings (speedo cable on passenger side) before Feb of 1965. All 4-speed 1965 Corvettes had them from the "git-go" (thanks Jack H.).

Re: I've never seen a left date stamp w/square bos

Were can I find the serial number?

What confused me is the driver side stamp and the square boss. Could it be a Dec '64 after the change to square bosses but befor the change to passanger side stamp? If so shouldn't the stamp be P1207?

If it is a Dec '64 that would make it a '65 car and a passanger side speedometer? Is the rule all '64 were driverside speedometers and '65 were all passangerside?

"Rule" as you call it regarding speedo drive only is true for Chevy, NOT Pontiac (including GTO) lots of 2+2 and GTO's built with drivers side speedo output in '65, not sure of other GM lines. If no VIN, very likely from a Pontiac pass car. VIN if present may be almost anywhere on the main case, a lot of them are stamped on the top of the case near or on the mounting flange. Corvette nearly always on the side of the case near the center bearing retainer. Corvette was the only plant that seemed to be 100% religious about the trans VIN stamping in the early '60s, although I've seen pass car trans stamps as early as '62, but it is not at all plants and models.

            Re: Muncie questions

            Tom,
The 325 main case was used for '64 and '65 models, The key is the tail (if it's the original to the trans). The 429 tails (pardon me.....extension housings) were only used through Feb. '65, so since your trans was assembled on July 7th, it would have had to be either July 7th, '63 or '64. If the "tail" has a thin rib along the bottom, it's early. If the rib has a wide flat bottom, it's late.
There's also a good possibility that the trans is from a Chevy Passenger car.
