    Another Pace Car question

I 'll try and keep this simple. I would like to se if anyone can tell me when the sequence of the Pace Car V.I.N. was started. I know that the last 6 are the sequence numbers but when did they start. i.e. mine is 1Z8748S901064. Did they start with 900000 or 901000, or some other number? Sorry if I seem to be running in circles with this, but any help or info would be great. Thanks for the help. Jeff

    Jeff -

The NCRS Spec Guide shows that they started with 900001, ended with 906502.

      John,
Thank you for the info. I knew that they only made 6502 of them. Now I have to figure out how many were L-82 cars and L-48(?)cars. I look forward to learning as much as I can from the people on this site. Once again, Thank you.

I believe you'll find this crowd does not speculate to the great degree others do on other forums in regards to Pace Car numbers. For example, while speculation exists, its not known nor documented how many L48, L82 or either with 4 speeds in Pace Cars. No body cared back than and therefore numbers weren't tracked. What's persisted are extrapolations and these number become part of the folk lore that trails Pace Cars. For example, the number 201 is used in reference to L82 four-speed Pace Cars in 78...but documentation does not exist to support such claims. It becomes more of a sellers gimmick than anything else.

I see what you're saying Tom, I'd be chasing a ghost trying to find some sort of answers on that. Thank you for the info and saving me from the agony of defeat.

Jeff, Tom is right about the speculation bit. Those in the know already know that there is no way to track the number of most option combinations as they don't exist.

Those who pretend to be in the know or want to look big to others, continually point out that there were 315 red '68 convertibles with the 390 hp and 4 sp and that only 20 of them had power windows, power brakes and power steering. Of those, 5 had the AM-FM stereo.

And if you believe that, I have a heck of a deal on some land in Florida.

Several years ago, some Corvette magazine was speculating that with the "modernizing" of Corvettes that occurred long ago that around 3000 or whatever '63 split windows were all that were left that are original and didn't have the split cut out for the '64 style window.

Since that time, this "fact" has been found in many Corvette ads so you know just how "rare" this particular '63 coupe is that they are selling.

Basically, if the numbers are not in the Black Book or the NCRS Spec Guides, then there aren't any.

Mike, Thanks for that little tid bit of info. Of the people that want to "sound big to others" and pretend to be in the know, I can do without their speculation of fact and fiction. I am more of a need to know the truth person. I feel that with the people here @ NCRS I can find that truth. I am new to the Vette world and want to do it right rather than be sent down the path of illusion. Once again, thank you and sorry for my "philosophy tangent". I will try to refrain from tose little outbursts in the future.

                Jeff:

And its good to know that you appreciate our candor and recognize the contributions of NCRS to the Corvette hobby. Too often the "hype" seems to control the discourse of debate and we just blow it off. You can't change the attitude of an idiot!
