    I spent a lot of time in the early days working on, looking at, and detailing my mid-March production L-76. I did't like the stains that developed on the heads between the inlet manifold and valve covers, but didn't know what I could do about it. There was no silver paint.

    My water outlet was painted silver. I figure it was painted before installation.

    Could be that silver paint was used on a hit or miss basis to "touch-up". Maybe some engines got it an others didn't.

    This controvery will probably never be completely resolved.

      This is a very well known all original 63 car with, I believe, 5000 miles. Pic was taken in about 1975. Clearly shows the silver paint on the bypass hose and thermo hsng. Silver paint was easily disolved in solvent and even hot motor oil so if there's no silver on the intake to cyl head gasket surface, it's probably due to the fact that the valve covers leaked slightly and the silver disappeared. It definitely wasn't durable and long lasting, but it was there. Without some coating, that surface would be rust before the car was even delivered to the first owner.

        Wow! Seemed like a simple enough question to me! My car is a 67, L79 and I'm still confused. Maybe NCRS should revisit this spec. in the judging manual. BTW, I'm just doing our car for the purpose of fun. Years ago when restoring Model A Fords we brought them back to as close as Henry made them. It was all just for the fun of it. Still is to me.
