Joe you were right, upon futher inspection I found a couple of bad teeth on the shaft gear. I ordered parts including the bronze button. I can`t find the posts on button installation, it can`t be too tough. Any advice would be appreciated. Also the book calls for lube inside the distributor housing but fails to specify what type. Is there a special lube for this? ..... Bill

I'm not surprised; rarely will a cross gear fail without taking out the mainshaft gear, too. Usually, it's just a couple of teeth, as you've found.
Use the adapter fitting and a center punch which fits snugly through the hole in the fitting to establish a center for drilling the end of the housing cavity. Then, drill a 3/16" hole "straight and true". You can drill part way through the housing so that you have enough depth for the center pin on the bushing, but not all the way through (so that the housing looks externally "original". Or, you can drill all the way through and, if you wish, fill the external hole with something like JB Weld.
No special lubricant is available anymore from GM for this application. However, if you use a good EP chassis lube, like GM #12377985, I think it will work fine.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
