    C2 Exhaust set up

63 convertible. Picture below shows Passenger side exhaust as I currently have it adjusted. I didn't realize that there was such close tolerance between the tailpipe and the spare carrier and the muffler and the rear tire. I have about 3/4" clearance to the carrier and 3/4" to the rear tire. That seems awfully close. the assembly manual has a spec for clearance to the strut rod bracket of .62 +or- .10 (if I read it correctly)and that's about what I have. Does this picture look about right, or do I still have some work to do?

Must just be an illusion but it almost looks like the muffler is leaning out instead of in, as though the right and left sides are switched. I guess it's not possible to reverst sides because the rear hanger would then be on the wrong side.

        Steve,

The exhaust looks okay from this angle, but it is hard to tell how the final fit will be until the body is on and you have to make the final adjustments with the exhaust extensions sticking through the valence panel. Take your time at that point and be sure to get them centered. This was the hardest part on my '64 exhaust was keeping the exhaust tips centered while keeping the other tolerences in check.

        Best Regards,

Note that if the exhaust system is installed in its correct position on the chassis when you drop the body, the outboard edges of the mufflers will interfere with the bottom of the quarter panels; St. Louis used a horizontal "come-along" fixture with pins that located in the muffler outlets to pull the mufflers toward car centerline about 2" per side that was removed after the body was down on the frame, to avoid fiberglass/paint damage during the drop.

I'm glad to know that, because I would have probably panicked when the panels wouldn't pass the mufflers.
