    MidYear Horns

I need to replace the horns on my 66. What Chevrolet models used the same A and F note horns?

    Re: MidYear Horns

Mark - The same note D- R horns were used on most of not all of the GM cars in the 60s and 70s.

If you have the original horns, a number of folks rebuild them and do an excellent job. It's a little pricey but worth it, in my opinion.

While we're discussing horns, what rationale would you follow to determine when a horn needs a rebuild?

In my case, my original '66 horns both make sound, the sound is a constant pitch (no wavering), but there are particles of something that I hear when I shake the horn. The particles are deep in the horn and won't spill out of the trumpet. There is a difference in pitch between the two horns but I can't claim they're in tune.

          Mine Rattled Too

So I took one apart and snapped a couple of photos of the steel diaphram (baffle?)inside. Send me an email, and I will send you photos of what your horns are disintegrating into (a little fuzzy, but you'll get the idea).

Tim - Good to hear from you. Usually, the problem is they either don't work and work some of the time. I guess if they work (most of us probably can't tell if they are in tune), sound strong, and don't rattle when working from the pieces inside, I'd leave well enough alone, but sooner or later 35 plus year old horns are going to need open heart surgery. Hopefully, others will share their suggestions and experience on rebuilding them now or waiting until they fail. Pete
