    68 Rubber floor mat question

    Gentlemen,
On a 68, were the original rubber floor mats clear or black rubber?
Also, one mat is long and one is short: which one goes on which side?
    Thank you,
    Kurt #26406

Both the drivers side and the passenger side should be die-cut and close in length, the pass. side a little shorter.

      I don't think any stock/orginal were clear.

Clear or black were available in 1970, but I don't know about earlier. The black is a rubber like material, but the clear is clearly (I know, I know -- I couldn't resist) plastic. We don't have real good information about early C3 floor mats because they do not fit our judging standard. They were dealer installed options, and most owners remove them rather than face a deduction because they were not factory equipment.

Not sure about this but I believe clear only for 68 and the black was added some time later. I had an NOS set years ago and one was side was definitely much shorter than the other. I think I may have the original 68 accessory sheet that would show the color and part number. If so, I'll post it.

Found the accessory books. The 68 and 69 are both the same part number and both are listed as clear. I suppse 1970 was the first year for black? (sorry, no 1970 accessory book) Page below is 1968.

I have the original mats in my 68 convertible and as the original owner I can say that they were delivered with my car. They are (or were) clear. They are a bit foggy now. They appeared to be made of heavy vinyl or plastic and I was always dissappointed at how stiff they were. They have the C3 logo embossed on the top of the mat in the plastic. One is longer than the other. The shorter one was on the Drivers side (not a good fit) and the longer one fits the passenger well pretty well. They were in the car when I picked it up so I guess I thought they just came with it as did the mats in my Z06.

Jim, is there any chance you have a picture of your mats to send me. I have a set of NOS dealer mats that are for suposed to be for a 68 corvette. They are still in the box. I would like to compare them with what came with your car. Thanks, Terry

Yes I can take a picture of them, but give me some time. I was going to reply to your door handle question but my car is up on a lift (has been for more than a year) and hard to get to. I will answer both questions. By the way, do you know if these mats came with all cars or did my dealer slip in a freebe. Believe me, if he did it is the ONLY freebe I ever got from him.

I seem to recall they were dealer installed but I can't recall where I got that information. It may have come as part of the dealer prep or something. I would like to hear from you about the door handles and the mats. I will send pictures of mine to you. If you need pictures of the door handles just email me at tfringo@aol.com. I am basicly trying to figure out some better cut off dates for the different handles. Thanks, Terry

There was a "dealer accessory" brochure in the early C3 years (probably other years as well). That is where the floor mat(s) are pictured. My dealer charged me for the clear ones for my 1970. They had to be ordered, and I picked them up from the parts department after I took delivery of the car.

Probably the same way you could buy the road hazard kit, passenger side mirror, lugage rack.
