    Speaker recommendations for my 69

I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to the "sound system" in my 69 so any advice here would be great!
I now have my radio working what I think is pretty good on the bench and for test speakers I'm using 3 way 6x9's because that is all I had laying around that are 8 ohms. I replaced the original ones back in 88 with 4 ohm ones without realizing that they were wrong for the radio so now I want to get some good quality 4x10's 8-10 ohms for it. I also saw that one of the major repro vendors sell a replacement 4x6 but I'm thinking that the sound quality might not be as good as the original. Any thoughts on this guys?

i bought some replacements and they looked original but the sound wasn't that great, i think they concentrated more on looks than sound quality. i'd get some speakers that would fit from a real speaker store.

The repro's are not 8-10 ohm and will be stressfull on the radio amps. They are actually less. The radio has a fusable link inside that will usually be taken out. But, why take a chance. Thanks, Terry

Well I didn't know that the repros are not the proper 8-10 ohm ones. Any ideas where I could find some quality speakers then?

Personally, I would just find some originals and have them reconed. The 4x10 speaker really doesn't exist any more. Reconing originals is probably better than NOS because a speaker can sort of deteriorate if not stored well. Used one's are around and I see them on ebay from time to time. If you call around, you can find some. Terry

Thanks Terry, I still have my originals so maybe I should try and find them. I was just thinking that I might be able to some what improve the sound quality by going with some new technology speakers but then again re-coned ones might sound good too.

If you still have them, I would recone them. There was a recent post on this subject within the last month or so. Sound quality is not that important to me as originality. A 35 year old car radio will always be just that. But everyone has their own opinion. I get satisfaction out of making the original stuff work the way it was intended too. Take care, Terry

Thanks Terry, I know what you mean out originality....I'm still trying to convince the car guys at work that I'm not crazy in putting bias plys back on!

I'll try and find my old speakers. I just thought that newer style speakers might help out the old radio put out what it used to. I'm not trying to make it better, just at least as good as it once was. Maybe the reconed ones will do just that.

I have a set of red lines too but they are really just for looks. I will purchase a set of nice radials once I am back on the road again. Those biasply tires might as well be 6 ply on such a light car. They ride very hard. You can feel every bump. Take care, Terry
