1961 Engine Removal

I'm getting ready to pull the engine on my '61 for some rebuild work. Can the engine be removed/replaced with the transmission attached? It looks like there is enough room after removing the obvious like the radiator, shrouds and fan, and of course removing the shifter assembly. I want to be sure as it would be the wrong time to find when it is half dangling out of the car hung up on the tunnel.

Thanks Mike, that's what I thought. It sure will be eaiser to put it all back together outside of the car too. I've done my time on the garage floor with the tranny on my chest. Not fun!

I've done this twice, both times with the transmission attached. I believe the ST-12 recommends leaving the transmission attached. But you can also do it with the transmission off.

How you choose to do it may depend on the engine hoist and the overhead space you have. The car needs to be off the ground for you to get under there and disconnect the transmission. If the car's up on jackstands, make sure you have enough overhead room for the engine hoist. If you don't, and you need to lower the car before you yank the motor, you may wish to remove the tranmsission separately.

When you pull the motor, you may find it easier to first remove the shielding, the distributor, and the fuel pump in addition to the other items you list.

In fact, if you have never removed an engine before, you can buy the booklet "How to Rebuild Your Small Block Chevy". Lots of good tips and hints on doing this correctly. While not specifically addressing the Corvette, it is appropriate for the SB chevy engine. I found it to be a very valuable tool and I have used it for both the three engines that I have pulled. It also gives great techniques for reinstalling them.
