    restoring 67 exhaust manifolds

What is the correct way to restore 67 exhaust manifolds. I've seen the cast coating that is brused on and then baked and I'm sure a cast blast spray is also available. The judging guide shows as new..as always your input and knowledge is appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Mark, I just finished my exhaust manifolds and they look as original as anyone would want. I used Calyx Manifold Dressing. It goes on like shoe polish in a paste form. I sand blasted and then used a tooth brush to apply dressing. Also did the Heat Riser as well and it also looks great. I'm going to do the head bolt heads and shielding brackets tomorrow. LICS has it for $13. Good Luck, Al W. PS: Touch up is a breeze and it does not dicolor from heat. It gives you a natural cast iron silver.

      Mark,

I think Allan has some good thoughts on the manifold coating, unless you are refering to a 427. If that's the case, then the manifolds are correctly restored when painted engine orange.

Someone mentioned a graphite coating a while back for 327 manifolds and I've seen a few done using this process. They look good. Not sure who makes it.

Yes William, used directly on the exhaust manifolds. The graphite coating seems to work well and last a long time.

                We are talking exhaust here.

Yea, the exhaust manifolds. Someone said that small block 67's were natural but big blocks were supposed to be painted orange, just like the rest of the motor. I dunno who it was but maybe he was confused and meant the intake manifold.

Yer probably right. Most of it would likely just burn and turn black within 15 minutes anyway. Wonder how the guys at the factory did that so no paint was on the exhaust manifolds, especially on a big block?

Actually, I should be thanking YOU for straightening me out on this. I've obviously had it wrong for all these years.

                              Allan,

So after you applied the manifold dressing did you have to bake the manifolds to complete the process. I had a 68 done 4 years ago with the same sort of dressing that had to be baked @ 350 degrees for 3-4 hours after application and the manifolds still look very good after 3,000 miles of driving. The car that's getting done now is a 427/400 h.p. car that I'm looking to get judged for Top Flight and just want to get it right.

                              Thanks,
                              Mark
