    C2:67 Carpet tag

Is this a carpet tag or a storage compartment tag:

If my memory serves me right, I found this under the carpet on the passenger side when I redid my original 67 carpets a few years ago. It looks quite different then the one in the JG under rear storage area.

The text and numbers on it are:

    J.P. Stevens & Co., Inc.
    3897411
    1070-T, Black
    1967 Chev. Corvette
    Front Floor Lays/19467-67 (?)

looks like the top third of 38 67 on the bottom of the tag.

Can someone dicipher the numbers, and I'll tell you if you are right.

Also, if this is a carpet tag only, would there be a corresponding rear storage compartment tag? Should I lay out the bucks to get a phoney repro tag, for the rear storage cover for judging.

    Jerry

My carpet tag off of my 67 has a part # of 3897412 so I don't know if the driver / passenger side had different part #'s. All of the other info. on my tag is identical to your tag.

      Judgement call...

While the JG books disclose the use of the JP Stevens label on the bottom of the rear compartment storage door, there's a bit of trivia the books don't discuss. The label was in place when the carpet components were delivered from Stevens, BUT, the factory AIM called for St. Louis assy folks to also install various GM labels on the door (posi warning, tire pressure, Etc.).

On more than one original car (including my '65), I discovered the JP Stevens label intact on the compartment door, but BENEATH one of the labels subsequently installed by Chevy at St. Louis! Therefore, when I judge interiors and don't see the JP Stevens label on the rear compartment door, the benefit of the doubt goes to the owner that it might be there and covered (partially or completely) by the other labels the factory installed.

However, other interior judges may have less liberal policy when they judge, so the decision is yours.... Certainly, the label would have been fresh/new when the car left the factory which the repro label does. But, when I see a real McCoy, faded original label, I kind of 'forget' to take condition deduction(s).

You might consider transferring the original label you have from the bottom of your original carpet set over to the storage compartment door...

        How about this one

Glad I saved these when I changed my original board, couldn't bear to glue this tattered label on a new board.

But I found my original warped board and I'm thinking of straightening it out and reinstalling.

I'm missing the positraction label, is there also a tire pressure or other labels. Were the labels different for A O Smith 67's.

Has anyone got a picture to post of the bottom of the board with the correct positions of the labels.

I know there is not a lot of points in this, but what the heck. Thought about scanning the originals, and printing them on photo paper to install, and keeping the originals in plastic in my project book. I know the replacements are cheap but they are not the originals.

        Getting anal ,

Gerald ...I believe that the last line reads either LH or RH and not Lays. Here are carpet tags with circular inspector stamp off my 67. Tissy Smith (? ) okayed my carpet.

In my earlier post I told you guys I had tag # 3897412. For what it's worth I also have 3897411. I'll get with my restorer to see what carpet section he pulled the tags from.

                How about this one ('63)

                Hi John -

Interesting observation. This is off my '63, so this may have changed at some point over the years. My labels are located similarly to yours (straighter), but they are both oriented upside down from yours. Plus all the edges of the labels are slathered with some sort of glue to hold them in place (my original labels were not self-adhesive). Might be a '63 thing.

                  Great pictures John, thanks

I guess my carpet tag is from the left side. Didn't know there was a left and right. I'm gonna rummage through my stuff for the right side one. I guess they were there so the installer didn't put the carpet section upside down.

Also, nice shot of the storage board, just what I needed.

                  Thanks,

                    Jerry -

A.O. Smith bodies were bare-naked inside from the belt line down; all carpeting, storage compartment cover board, etc. were installed at St. Louis.

                      Look what I found!

After seeing John's pictures, I went rummaging in the garage to find my original storage compartment cover. Lo and behold, behind a stack of scrap lumber, I found it. Here it is:

I never throw anything out, that's why my wife is always after me to make a run to the dump.

I'm very happy to find that the Positraction tag, and the remnants of the Stevens tag are still attached. Here they are:

But the storage board is badly warped in two directions. That's why I replaced it about 5 years ago.

Any recommendations on how to straighten and restore it? Would it be better to replace the tags, or try to preserve them in place?

I'd make my own replica tags...

but then, that's what I do anyway.

                          Jerry,
I would think that if you placed the board on a concrete floor and then put some heavy weight on the board it might flatten out over an extended period of time.

steam it to soften it up then lay flat using a heavy object till it dries
