    C-1 windshield replacement

Does anyone know if it's possible to replace the windshield glass and seal without removing the windshield frame from the car? This is a restored '59 with no modifications.

    Thanks, Larry

Larry, I don't think its possible due to the way the windshield frame is assembled. Further, it isn't easy to remove as a unit unless you happen to be a contortionist!! Good Luck

Larry, I've heard of people doing it but I wouldn't reccomend it. If your windshield posts aren't already broken that will do it. It's really not that hard to do. There a lot of things to remove and it takes 2 people to lift the frame and glass when it's loose but not hard at all. Get an ST-12 if you don't already have one as most of what you need to know is detailed there. Also I'd get a new windshield seal kit from Glass works or one of the other specialty shops and change the main seal while it's apart. Whatever you do DO NOT use a G.M. seal. They dry rot and crack rather quickly. Good Luck ! Rich #2276

Larry, Corvette Service Guide under windshield disassembly says: "place windshield assmebly on a bench." I know this to be true, I recently replaced the windshield gasket. Glass nor gasket can be replaced on car. Regards,

An "old glass guy" told me that back in the bad old days, when they were "flat rating" a windshield replacement on a Corvette, they would do it on the car. How, you ask???.......By breaking the windshield post tabs to give some wiggle room to get the glass installed. I'm sure that that is why you see so many broken tabs on windshield posts. The only way to do it right is to take the entire assembly off the car. Hope this helps. Chuck

            Thanks for your help...

I am sure the "easy way" I heard about is just as you said, they broke the tabs. I think the only way left is to enjoy two days under the dash and remove the frame.
