    Stolen vehicle search

Is there a web site that Joe Public can use to check a vehichle's serial number
against a "hot list" of stolen cars?

The info must be out there someplace because US Customs wanted the title info for my '59 for a couple days prior to me importing it from the USA into Canada.
They said it was to make sure it wasn't a stolen car.

And, if your car is indeed hot,

they'll perform another public service whether you're poiite or not or like it or not.

I am under the impression that contacting the police is not foolproof. I believe that they can only check regionally and I am quite sure not internationaly.

          Pat,

My understanding is that it's not just to check whether the car is stolen, but also whether or not it has been identified as being involved in a crime; ie: a drug dealer's vehicle or used as a "getaway" car, etc.

When a VIN is queried on LEIN (Law Enforcement Information Network) it will check for any wants at the state level and federal level (NCIC). It will not give any background info as to be used in criminal activity(selling drugs etc). That info would be available if you ran the license plate, not the VIN.

              Try the following link: http://www.nicb.org
I believe I found it in a story about the long lost Corvette recently returned to its owner. This website is temporarily open to check vehicles in the hurricane damaged southern states. I believe, normally, you have to log in to research. Hope this helps.
