O.K. here I am again with another question. It seems that the previous owner before my father had removed the smog pump and hoses for my Pace Car. I discovered this last night while I was poking around under there. My question is this. Do any of you in your infinit wisdom know where I can get ALL of the stuff required to keep the califoania car gods happy? I have the brackets still in place, just need everything else. Please help, I am almost there with the refire. Any info you can give me will be a great help. As always, thank you. Jeff

Re: SMOG question
Jeff, Both are publications/magazines. The Driveline is the official publication for NCRS members (every 2 Months). Hemmings is monthly and for sale at book stores.- Top

Re: If you have patience
Jeff:
Often I see late model C3 smog equipment for sale through eBay...but getting smog compliant with a non-smog vehicle also involves carb jetting, adjustments, timing and something else that escapes me at the moment. It's also tranny dependent but all of this can be worked out by a good mechanic who knows his stuff and has the equipment.
As a start...get a copy of the 78 NCRS technical reference guide and pay attention to the California smog components.
My point is...everyone is calling Bill and waiting whereas you may get lucky by using some other avenues like swap meets, eBay or other forums where these parts are readily avabilable.Tom Russo

Re: SMOG question
Jeff another option since you already have the brackets on the engine is purchasing a rebuilt smog pump from Auto Zone. Other parts places may also offer the same. I bought a rebuilt smog pump for my original owner 68 from Auto Zone and it appears to me just like the original pump which I did not return as a core. I am pleased with the rebuilt unit and the purchase price was very reasonable. I have e-mailed you instead of posting on the board because you did ask for any information. Jim- Top

Re: SMOG question
Tom, the 78 is an original smog car.(according to the cowl sticker.) i.e. AIR, EGR,EFE( whatever EFE is) Hopefully I won't have to make it a complete gutless wonder just to get it to pass Ca. smog tests. Thanks for the info on the 78 NCRS book. I would like to get some books for the Vette, but with soo many out there how is a man to choose?
Jim, I saw the very same pump that you are talking about at Auto Zone's website. I'm much more interested in their price as opposed to the one that Zip sales. However, I can't seem to get them to say whether or not they have the rest of the parts that I need. (injection tubes, diverter valve, etc.) Always seems like some punk kid that just got into auto shop is on the other end of the line. "UUUHH DUUUUDE, I think we got something like that" I know Zip has all the other stuff that I need. Yeah, price does matter so Ebay is an option, but if I buy new stuff at least I know it works. Sorry if I seem to rant, but I just got off the phone with Spicolli again.
As always, thank you for the help.- Top

Re: SMOG question
If your objective is only to pass the emission testing, then get the AutoZone (or anyone's) pump. They may have the diverter valves.
If not, hit some junkyards. By 1978, they were pretty generic items on Chevies. The missing tubes and valves will be more or less common to Impalas, Chevelles, trucks, vans, etc.
Get a couple of pictures of what they should look like for your car, then go out and find what looks similar from any Chevy.
The test guy is never going to know if that tube is '78, '79, '75, or whatever.

Re: SMOG question
If it helps, reinstalling all your smog gear will cost you only 1 or 2 horsepower at the most. It doesn't take much to drive the smog pump.- Top
