    C2 vent window questions

Wanting to re-chrome my '67 vent windows, I removed the assemblies today, and I would appreciate this board's advice.

    1. The rubber weather stripping inside the vent window which seals it when closed (comprising the front and aft "triangle") is perfect - no cracks, no tears, no nuttin'. The vent window seals, turns, works.

Question: To re-chrome the vent window assembly means removing this weather stripping. Will it "lift" out with gentle force? Is it glued in? Is it held in by friction? Or...what?

    2. Secondly, if I can indeed remove the weather stripping without doing much damage to it, will it then be suitable for re-install, or will new weather stripping be required? (As an aside, are there suppliers with quality products?)

    3. Lastly, the crank-up window guide is a part of the vent assembly, and extends downward from the vent assembly. It contains the "fuzzy" window track insert. The "fuzzies" have bit-the-dust. There is significant 'slop' in the track's ability to keep the roll-up window securely in place.

Question: Can this track - these "fuzzies" - be refurbished? Replaced? If so, I believe there are maybe five rivets holding the "fuzzies" in the steel track.

Thanks for whatever anyone can add.

If your vent window's rubber seal is serviceable, then by all means, keep it. The reproduction seals, I have found, are somewhat thicker, and require a long "break in" period to conform perfectly to the vent glass. Very similar to a new pair of shoes. The rubber seals are held in place with "spring steel" clips.
As far as the front tracks are concerned, be sure to buy any of those that are marketed as "pre bent". You are correct in saying that they are rivetted and screwed into the front track channel.

HI Joe I read your post, what steel clips hold the vent window rubber? you lost me, the vent window rubber is held in by the vent assy its self, that is, the way its made, the rubber is wedged in the frame. Phil 8063

        Phil,

I am fairly sure that the thicker, forward/bottom section(with the approx. 60 degree included angle)has spring steel clips which are molded in. There are about 5 of them. The seal DOES fit within the channel in the frame, but the molded in clips serve to locate it in 5 or 6 places.
The thinner, straight rear section has a molded in stiffener with studs (5 or 6, I think), and is held in place with small nuts.

Mine were rechromed by Charlie Santorelli who advertises in the Drivelate as well as other Corvette publications. Charlie offers a turn-key service where all you do is send him your originals and he rechromes, replaces, and reassembles everything and they come back to you ready to bolt back in. I found the price for that to be rather steep (don't remember exactly but it was several hundred $$ each) and I opted just for the rechrome and will rebuild them myself. I got all the parts I needed from Joe Ray.
